Reminder: Fireworks are Illegal in Wisconsin

By Elizabeth Braun, Melissa McCrady

TOWN OF RAYMOND - Fireworks and the 4th of July go hand in hand, but safety is important.

It's legal to buy fireworks in Wisconsin, but it's illegal to use them. However, every year you hear about an injury because of someone shooting off fireworks and every year stores are packed with customers.

At the Phantom Fireworks store in the Racine County Town of Raymond sales on Friday were brisk.

Taylor Gustafson and Amy Sahs were preparing for a big bash this holiday weekend. They plan to fire off rockets in Kenosha, even though it's illegal. Taylor says she does it every year.

The state of Wisconsin outlaws the use of fireworks, essentially anything that explodes or shoots in the air. A house caught on fire at 30th and Vliet in Milwaukee earlier this week because kids were playing with fireworks.

Milwaukee Deputy Fire Chief Randy Zingler says, "We had a firefighter that ended up in the hospital overnight because of that fire."

He can't stress enough the dangers of using fireworks.

"[They're] very dangerous especially if you aren't used to handling them."

The manager of one business says many of his customers buy their fireworks here but then take them to states where they're legal to use.

Fire officials say your best bet for dazzling entertainment is just to check out a professional fireworks display.
