Mayor Barrett Stands By Chief FlynnBy Charles Benson
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn, who is married, has admitted having an affair.
Chief Flynn has been very popular with officials at City Hall, the police union, and the public.
Will this have any impact on his job?
TODAYS TMJ4 has learned that Mayor Tom Barrett has talked to Chief Flynn about the affair and is standing by the chief.
My source says the mayor has known about this for two weeks. He was out of town Thursday night but he is expected to release a statement soon in support of Chief Flynn.
It was Mayor Barrett who helped bring Flynn to Milwaukee. He likes what the chief is doing to reduce crime.
Late Thursday night the police union president John Balcerzak issued this statement:
"If what is being reported is true Chief Flynn must hold himself to the same standard that he requires of the officers he commands.
He should give a full disclosure regarding the events and accept responsibility for his actions."
And we learned from a statement by Flynn to Journal Sentinel investigative columnist Dan Bice that he is admitting to the affair and apologizing.
How will this play on the streets? Flynn has been in Milwaukee 17 months and up until he has been enjoying a good relationship with the community, political leaders and his officers.
