Reward Offered in Shopkeeper's Death

By Melanie Stout

Throughout the day parents have brought their kids to the store and learned that their candy store is closed and Mr. Roland is gone.

77 year old Roland Haefner loved the children that would come to his store. Every day he drove from his South Milwaukee home to his variety store.

Kids would come in just about everyday. They loved Mr. Rolland or Grandpa as they called him. They can't believe he's gone and neither can his friends.

"Geez. He's just such a nice guy. People were in and out the whole time you know? I just couldn't believe it," says Jonny Pugh.

Haefner was retired and enjoyed running his store. At the most he'd make $40 a day. Still, he was targeted by a robber.

Witnesses say the gunman came in through the back door and demanded money. When Haefner told him to get out, he was shot.

"He's just a sweet old guy looks like anybody's grandfather just nice soft spoken guy easy to get along with."

People were outside the store at the time including a little boy waiting to get his candy.

Police are asking for the public's help and a $2,000 reward is being offered by the shopkeeper's friends.

Milwaukee police ask anyone with information on the case to give them a call.
