Officers Gunned Down: Suspect Arrested

By Charles Benson

MILWAUKEE - It was a chaotic day in Walkers Point as a man opened fire on two police officers. It all went down about 3:10 Tuesday afternoon near 2nd and National. Both officers were shot multiple times. But they're expected to survive. One block from the shooting scene, police with hand guns and assault rifles surrounded a house where the suspect was hiding. Officers moved in and took an 18-year-old man in custody. Neighbor Marie Espino was across the street and watched it all. "Pretty scary because I got my kids in the house we were playing in the alley when everything happened," said Espino. "We heard the shots." Police surrounded the house near S. 3rd and Walker thanks to a tip from the homeowner. The owner now says the suspect apparently entered through an open fence gate and then went into the basement through an open door. The homeowner was on the second floor and didn't know the suspect was in the house until he got a call from a friend asking if he heard about the shooting. Worried, the homeowner went downstairs to check on the door. He found it closed, then told police and that's when they moved in. Police quickly entered the front door but the armed suspect was hiding in the basement. The 18-year-old was arrested without a shot fired. He is identified as Julius C. Burton of Milwaukee. He has minor criminal record. One source says he made statements admitting to the shooting. The big question: where did the 18-year-old get the gun? Police know the answer and they plan to tell us Wednesday.
