Flooding in WheatlandBy Michael GeorgeWHEATLAND -- After the area's big melt, there's nowhere for all the water to go. It is causing rivers to swell. It's near perfect conditions for flooding. Lots of snow, followed by warm temperatures and a big rainfall. That's just what happened here along the Root River in Racine County and the Fox River in Kenosha County, where some homes are partially submerged in the water. In Wheatland, the unusual December flooding is already causing damage to homes. "Inch and a half of rain in December is very uncommon," said Jeffrey Rudolph of Wheatland. "And with almost 40 inches of snow melting, there's no place for the water to go." Rudolph, like many people in who live in his neighborhood, is an unofficial expert on flooding. The town has seen several major floods this year. "We had water damage," Rudolph said. "Nothing inside the house but the basement, the furnace, the hot water heater all had to be replaced this year." But even in Wheatland, flooding in December is out of the ordinary. "They're talking cold weather again coming at the tail end of the week, so if the water doesn't go away and then it freezes up, it's here for the winter," Rudolph The National Weather Service reports the Fox River is 2.5 feet above the flood stage and it could take four days before the water fully recedes. |
