Charcoal Grill Blamed For House Fire

By Tom Murray

TOWN OF WEST BEND - Someone apparently lit a charcoal grill too close to a house. The result: a fire that destroyed the house. The family and their pets got out safely. The fire chief says the grill was only about 4 feet from the house, and that's where the fire started. By the time firefighters finished dousing the flames at the rural Washington County home, there wasn’t much left. “I saw flames coming up and black smoke,” said neighbor Mary Bartel. “I was very frightened for our whole neighborhood.” A neighbor called 911. He noticed the smoke before the family inside the burning home at 5725 Hickory Knoll Drive in the Town of West Bend. “It’s fully engulfed,” the caller told the 911 dispatcher. “They’re trying to get everything out right now.” Jayson Pirlot’s family and their two dogs escaped unharmed, but their home and a truck in the driveway are a total loss. Pirlot said six people were inside the home when they noticed smoke. He said they appreciated the efforts of the four fire departments who responded. Chief John Breuer of the Allenton Volunteer Fire Department told TODAY’S TMJ4 that a charcoal grill likely is to blame. “Grilled outside, left the grill close to the house,” Breuer said. “Maybe a spark or an ember with the light wind we got today got into the garage, which was open at the time.” Breuer said the fire spread from the garage to the attic and then through the upper level of the home. Pirlot did not want to comment on the chief’s assessment. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. One incurred a puncture wound when a piece of roof fell on him. The other had a small cut moving items in the burnt home. Both men were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend as a precaution.
