NEW: Driver, Victim in Monster Truck Accident Close Friends
MADISON - A deadly disaster caught on camera. 41-year-old George Eisenhart apparently did not realize the monster truck "Samson" rumbled in his direction. Eisenhart stepped right into it's path was struck by the massive front tire. The crowd inside the Alliant Energy watched as the Saturday show came to a halt.
"I've never seen something so horrific and terrifying in my entire life,” said one spectator.
Eisenhart, an Ohio-based promoter, eerily gave an interview to a Madison television station about the effort he puts in to make his shows safe only hours before the accident.
"In my 16 years of doing the Madison show we have had a great safety experience,” he told WISC-TV.
Samson's driver is a 54-year-old man from Ohio who’s been driving on the monster truck circuit for more than 20 years. He told investigators he knew immediately he hit something. He did not realize he hit someone.
"Neither the truck driver nor Mr. Eisenhart saw each other before the collision," said coroner John Stanley.
Eisenhart had been serving as public address announcer for the event. Witnesses remember seeing the microphone fly from his hand.
This is the second monster truck show tragedy this month. A six-year-old boy died in Washington state after a flying chunk of metal blasted him in the head. That's why Eisenhart wanted to reassure his Wisconsin audience.
"We've never had, knocking on wood, an incident happen like that,” Eisenhart said in the WISC interview.
He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
The director of Alliant Energy Center said there has not been safety problems with Eisenhart's group in the past.
The Dane County Sheriff's Office ruled the death an accident and will not criminally punish the monster truck driver.
Sunday's performance of the Monster Truck & Thrill Show in Madison was canceled. Tickets purchased online with be automatically refunded; others can return to the location they purchased the tickets for a refund.
