Don't even try it. That's the warning from fire crews about lighting dry grass near your home. No rain means a bad situation after controlled burns. Fire crews around Southeast Wisconsin have been busy the past couple days, putting out those fires. The grass fires have been a big problem lately. It's the prime time of year for healthy controlled burns, but it's also so dry that the fire departments have been called out repeatedly to grass fires that raged out of control. The grass incinerates instantly as professional crews from Tall Grass Restoration work to burn off fields. They're trained on exactly what to do, and using special torches, they control exactly where and how the fire spreads. "It benefits the habitat for the animals, it makes it easier for people to walk through, and just promotes native vegetation," says the company's Jordan Rowe. Things are so dry that experts warn people shouldn't try to light controlled burns without special training. "It is impressive and it's also kind of scary," says Rowe, "Because one little spark can start anything else downwind. The cornfield behind us is a concern. One little spark gets in there and it could go, so we really have to monitor it. Know what you're doing." Besides the lack of rain in the last few weeks, the humidity is low. There's also enough wind that fire can travel quickly. Firefighters responded to out of control grass fires in Dodge, Jefferson and Waukesha Counties in recent days. Property owners started the fires but lost control of them. Elkhorn's Fire Chief supervised a controlled burn Friday. He warns property owners from starting burns themselves. "If they don't have the equipment to do it, if they have a garden hose that goes 50 feet, well when the hose runs out the fire doesn't stop," says Fire Chief Rod Smith. Fond du Lac County says they've already had about 50 out of control grass fires this month. Their emergency management office issued a statement Friday warning people to not even try it. |
