Many Trades Hiring in Tough Economy

  • Print

There's some encouraging news in this rough job market, as many trades are actually hiring.

Local high school students are taking advantage of the Building Advantage Career Fair in Waukesha County, focusing on all kinds of skilled trades.

"In my construction management classes, i really enjoy the stuff we're doing there," said Eric Brown, a junior at germantown high school.

Students have the chance to learn about the skills and try it for themselves in this hands-on experience.

But with a tough economy and very few jobs available, do these students actually have a chance?

"I believe in it," said Mark Caravella, the President of Caravella Cement.

He has been in the cement business for over 34 years.

"I feel like once you learn a skill, it's with you for life. You can take it to any state, any country in this world."

Mark's union is taking on new hires right now, but he says that kids have to know their math and have a positive attitude.

A lot of the trades offer apprenticeships and jobs for people just finishing high school.

The fair is at the Waukesha County Expo Center and runs until 4:30 on Tuesday.

The Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee is holding a job fair until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

They are looking for servers, bartenders, cooks, hosts and dishwashers.

The hotel is located at 500 West Florida Street, just south of downtown.
