260 Pound Man Charged with Smacking, Killing Girlfriend

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- A 28-year-old Stratford man was accused Monday in the weekend beating death of his girlfriend following an argument that started after a fish fry.

Eric R. Mayer of Stratford was charged with one count of felony murder in the death of Cynthia Tyler, 43, at a home they shared in Stratford.

The criminal complaint said the couple got into an argument while driving home from a fish fry on Friday night.

Mayer told investigators that they continued fighting at home and his girlfriend kicked him in the mouth and then he "smacked" her in the face, knocking her unconscious. Mayer said that when she wouldn't wake up, he called 911.

The 260-pound Mayer said he didn't mean to hurt Tyler, whom he met in October and began living with in January, the complaint said.

Beer bottles and Southern Comfort whiskey were found in the bedroom where police found Tyler unconscious on the bed, the complaint said. Mayer had been drinking at the time of the incident, the complaint said.

Marathon County Circuit Judge Thomas Cane set Mayer's bail at $100,000 and ordered him to have no contact with Tyler's four children. His preliminary hearing was set for March 25.
