Students Push for UWM Name Change

By George Mallet

Five members of The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association Senate have had it with being lost in the shadow of The University of Wisconsin Madison. They want to change their school's name to The University of Milwaukee.

"We deserve a name that kind of gives us a little prestige and individuality," said fresh-faced student politico Tyler Kristopeit who is the driving force behind the move. "When I tell people I go to UWM, they say 'oh UW-Madison?' no, that's not the case."

Fellow Senator Matt Capristo believes it is simply wrong for a school of UWM's size and importance to be lost in the shadow of that other school.

"We graduate more Wisconsin residents than anybody in the state including Madison," he said with conviction as he stood in the school's bustling Student Union.

And the move by the five ambitious student legislators would appear to be resonating with the student body. TODAY'S TMJ4 sampled opinions on campus and couldn't find a single student opposed to the notion of a name change.

"I have friends that go to Madison," said freshman Victoria Rud. "And you know they're always like 'oh Madison is better.' No, Milwaukee is where it's really at."

Ian Rowley summed it up succinctly. "I think it's a good idea, gives us a little distinction."

But not all the posters on a UWM news blog like the notion. "What a waste of everyone's time," wrote a poster calling himself Dip Trippy. "Think of all the money that would need to be spent to change all the school's paraphernalia."
