Autopsy Today in Lake Winnebago Accident
An autopsy happens today for the father who plunged through the ice on Lake Winnebago, taking his daughter with him.
Dan Kleinhans, 44, and two little girls were pulled from the icy waters saturday afternoon. Dan was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter Savannah, 9, died at the hospital shortly after.
Her 8-year old friend is still fighting for her life at Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa.
Witnesses say the pickup truck hit a crack in the ice on the lake, and all three were trapped inside.
Then, the pickup began to sink.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says cracks like the one Kleinhans struck are not that uncommon this time of year.
Wind shifts and temperature changes can soften the ice.
"When you go out on the ice, you need to be aware that what was safe yesterday may not be safe today," said Scott Koehnke of the DNR.
The DNR says no ice is ever safe and when you go out on the lake, you're going at your own risk.
