"No matter what the temperature is, if you call the Milwaukee Fire department the Milwaukee Fire Department is going to respond," says Fire Lieutenant Brian Smith. He says firefighters have to stay warm, but adds that their gear isn't waterproof. "When the temperature gets this cold outside we tend to walk around like snowmen because once that water gets in there it sits there and freezes, so it makes it hard for us to move." Smith says firefighters will rotate shifts in the bitter cold and keep hoses flowing. If they turn the hoses off, they will freeze. |
