Plows readying for the snowstorm. | Photo: TODAY'S TMJ4 Waukesha Stretches Budget, Road SaltBy Elizabeth BraunWaukesha is changing the way it fights winter storms. The DPW's Joe DeLeon says Waukesha is dealing with stretched budgets and dwindling road salt. "We actually started mixing sand a little bit earlier this season," says DeLeon. In addition to mixing with sand, crews are only salting intersections. As for equipment used to spread that salt... mechanics are working hard to get every last mile out of it. Budgets are tight and the city doesn't want to have to buy new trucks. Blacksmiths like Craig Rittershaus have been working hard to repair aging equipment so the city can get every last mile out of it. "I'll be here until four at least, so, yea up all night," says Ritterhaus. "If they want me to stay later and plow, I'll go out and plow." |
