Therapy Dogs Help Anxiety PatientsBy Elizabeth BraunArea doctors are finding help from man's best friend. Aurora Health Center psychologist Dr. Brenda Reed has been using therapy dogs to treat patients with anxiety and depression among other things. Reed says contact with the dogs help patients feel more at home and relaxed. "There are a lot of people who want to make changes in their life, but are a little resistant to therapy, and had a hard time opening up sometimes." Patients have seen both their mental and physical health improve in part because of the therapy dogs. Among them is Ron Nagy, who was diagnosed with prostrate cancer. After that, the anxiety kept him up at night. He says Niko has been a tremendous help. "Just to be able to reach down and pet him, he soothes your inner self so much." Dr. Reed says she's thrilled her unlikely helper has been such a benefit. "It's amazing. It's part of what my job is, and what I think is especially amazing, my dog has no idea what effect he has on everyone." |
