Consumer Protection Warns of Craigslist Scammers
Wisconsin's Consumer Protection bureau has a warning about a popular website.
Craigslist is a place people can buy and sell just about anything, but it can be a haven for scammers. One local college student tried selling her car on the website for $800. A buyer sent her a check for $2,000.
The buyer claimed he overpaid and demanded the extra money back. The bureau's Elmer Prenzlow says that's a sign of a scam.
"Nothing screams scam like a payment that is more than the agreed price for the item." says Prenzlow, "Anytime a consumer gets a payment in excess of what has been agreed I can give you about a 100% guarantee they're about to be ripped off."
The college student waited for the check to clear before sending the money. The check bounced.
