Quadruplet Killed in Dodge County Crash

By By Jay Olstad, Jay Sorgi and Diane Znamierowski,

The holidays turned tragic for a Dodge County family over the weekend.

Their SUV spun out of control on an icy highway 151 near Beaver Dam and rolled over into oncoming traffic, where it was hit by another car.

Jared Salazar, who was seven years old, was killed.

He was a quadruplet and all his siblings were in the SUV, along with their parents.

There were no other serious injuries.

Jared and his siblings were in the same class at their school in Beaver Dam, where classes resume this morning following the holiday break.

It will be a tough day ahead for their classmates and teachers.

Jared Salazar also attended church at St. Katherine Drexel Parish in Beaver Dam.

That's where their fellow parishoners learned of his mother Rosa's surprise pregnancy back in 2001.

It was s surprise because doctors had told her she'd never have children. It turned out that she had quadruplets, including Jared.

A fund was set up to help with her medical expenses. The town's three Catholic churches rallied to raise $7,000 to help the couple.

"This family is a wonderful family," said Judy Johnsen, a family friend who spearheaded the fundraising drive.

"They were a very close family. The children were very close, and this is going to be a big adjustment for these children and for Rosa and (her husband) Hector."

Johnsen recently spent time celebrating the quadruplets' birthday with the family.

She recalls how Jared's face lit up, as did the other children's, when they opened the movies she and another friend got them.

Johnsen will be helping the family with funeral arrangements.

Donations may be sent to her attention at St. Katherine Drexel Parish.
