Typically the words "there's always next year" seem hollow after a loss like this, but for teams losing in conference championships, it's actually a good omen.
In three of the last four years, one of the teams in the Super Bowl lost a conference championship game the year before.
2007 - New England (lost to Indianapolis in 2006 AFC Final)
2005 - Pittsburgh (lost to New England in 2004 AFC Final)
2004 - Philadelphia (lost to Carolina in 2003)
One of those three teams who made it, the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers, won Super Bowl XLI.
Packers history is an even more positive omen.
Three times the Packers have lost conference or league title games. All three times, the next year, they won all the marbles.
1938 - lost to N.Y. Giants, 23-17, in NFL Championship Game
1939 - beat N.Y. Giants, 27-0, in NFL Championship Game
1960 - lost to Philadelphia Eagles, 17-13, in NFL Championship Game
1961 - beat N.Y. Giants, 37-0, in NFL Championship Game
1995 - lost to Dallas Cowboys, 38-27, in NFC Championship Game
1996 - beat New England Patriots, 35-21, in Super Bowl XXXI.
So take heart Packers fans.
If history's a good judge, you can start working on those tickets to Tampa for Super Bowl XLIII.
