Green Bay Now Embroiled in Controversy Over Nativity DisplayBy WTAQ RadioClick Here to listen to a report from WTAQ's Shawn Kiser In an about face, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmidt says no one else will be able to put symbols on Green Bay City Hall for right now. The mayor told several people who showed up at City Hall with symbols today that news. Those people weren't happy. The controversy started last week when city leaders spent their own money to put a nativity scene at Green Bay City Hall. The city then said it would allow religious symbols from other faiths to go up at City Hall. One woman who showed up Monday asked how a 'Pagan Pentacle' ended up on City Hall if she wasn't going to be allowed to add her symbol. Another told the mayor if her symbol couldn't go up, everything would have to come down. One of the women who came to city hall today wanted to put up a peace sign. The other woman brought a homemade cross that was supposed to represent the separation of church and state. The city got a number of requests, including a request from Wiccans who put up a wreath. That wreath was vandalized early Monday. Among the other requests, a man from Allouez asked to put up a Festivus Pole. Festivus was created by author Daniel O'Keefe in the 1970's, and brought into mainstream pop culture on the TV show "Seinfeld." The city now plans to discuss the issue and may come up with guidelines. Mayor Schmidt says, "it must be a symbol recognized by the associated religion and a symbol of an official holiday of the associated religion of which said holiday is celebrated between December 8th and the 31st." In addition, anyone wanting to add a symbol would have to pay a $100 fee. Mayor Schmidt says until the city council debates the proposed guidelines tomorrow night, the city will not allow new symbols on City Hall. |
