MUKWONAGO, Wis. (AP) -- A car crossed the center line and struck an oncoming sports utility vehicle, killing three high school seniors and injuring two others.
Derek Hazenfield, Christopher Persinger and Christian Weyer, all 17 and students at Mukwonago High School, died in Sunday's late morning accident on Highway 33 in the town of Caledonia in Columbia County, according to the county sheriff's department.
Principal Dale Henry said counselors were following the boys' class schedules Monday, to be available to their classmates.
"We just felt it was important to continue school," he said. "If there were students having difficulties, we would be able to help them through the day or they could go home if they wanted to."
Ten to 12 counselors are at the high school, which has about 1,750 students, Henry said.
He said Hazenfield and Persinger played on the tennis team and Weyer played football. All three had plans for college, he said.
The sheriff's department said the teens were returning from a weekend at Wisconsin Dells.
The three died on the scene. Craig Payne, 57, of Baraboo, was driving the sports utility vehicle and he was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, the sheriff's department said. The State Patrol said one other person was injured in the SUV, but had no further information.
Hazenfield and Persinger were not wearing seat belts, the department said.
