Walker, Holloway Face Off on County Budget
An amended 2008 county budget has been passed by the County Board, but it's causing battles between County Executive Scott Walker and Board Chairman Lee Holloway over raises and spending levels.
The spending plan increases taxes by nearly 4%, and raises the property tax levy for the county to $250,000,000. It also includes a raise for supervisors.
"I want my colleagues to be enthusiastic about their job," said Holloway.
"I think they've sacrificed enough, and I think it's fair that they receive a pay raise."
But County Executive Scott Walker says citizens are being taxed enough, and he and others plan to alter it.
"We're gonna send down a package that takes to heart the kind of concerns that we've not only heard at the county level, but from MPS parents and taxpayers last week where they said 'enough is enough,' " said Walker.
Walker does have a line-item veto authority to take out some of the items included in the budget, but the board can override his vetoes.
