Bird Found With West Nile in West Bend

WEST BEND, Wis. (AP) -- The West Nile virus has surfaced in West Bend.

The Washington County Health Department says a blue jay has tested positive for the virus.

But, the state's Division of Public Health says reports of humans contracting the virus are down drastically from last year.

Twenty-one people got the virus last year. This year only three cases have been reported.

Health experts say only one out of 150 people infected with the virus will become severely ill. State epidemiologist Diep Hoang Johnson says the more severe cases of meningitis or encephalitis occur in about one percent of cases.

The Centers for Disease Control records show 1,395 human cases nationwide through mid-September compared to 4,269 cases last year.
