Hypermiling: Getting More Bang for Your Gas BuckBy Dan O'Donnell and Charles Robinson
With gas prices solidly over $3 a gallon, getting the most drive for the dollar is becoming a top priority. But people like Debbie Anders, a library assistant at UWM, take conservation to the next level.
Anders is a hyper-miler. According to cleanmpg.com, a hypermiler is a driver who strives to exceed the EPA's fuel economy rating.
"I drive a Ford Escape hybrid, which is rated at 31 mpg on the highway and 36 mpg in the city, and i'm regularly getting in the mid 40's in miles per gallon," she said.
Hypermilers get such good gas mileage by doing things like drafting on the freeway and not braking hard or often in the city.
Anders will be putting her hypermiling skills to the test at the Hybridfest MPG Challenge race in Madison this weekend.
She has a simple reason for wanting to conserve gas milage too.
"Those of us who consider ourselves hypermilers, we're just all little people doing little things that add up to helping in a bigger way," she said.
Saving a little money on gas doesn't hurt either. |
