Miller Says it's Behind Brewers Despite Wrigley AdBy Jon Byman
A spokesman for the Miller Brewing Company says Miller roots for the Milwaukee Brewers 105 percent.
That's after a Miller Lite at at Wrigley Field over the weekend series with the Brewers seemed to suggest otherwise. The ad, pictured on the left, reads "we'd prefer a pennant chase to a sausage race." It could be taken as a suggestion that the company was rooting for the Cubs, who trail the Brewers in the National League Central. It could also be seen as a slam on the Brewers sausage race.
The ad, which is on a billboard outside Wrigley's right field bleachers, changes so that it is specific to every series the Cubs play at Wrigley. This time, however, many of the fans who saw it were Brewers fans, not Cubs fans. The Brewers, of course, play in the shadow of Miller's headquarters in Miller Park.
Miller Spokesman Julian Green tells Newsradio 620 WTMJ, "what it was intended to do was create some chatter." It has. Green says, "There are fans who may have looked at the sign and took it the wrong way, but we are behind the Brewers. I think what we all agree on is that the Brewers have a fantastic chance of going all the way and we support that."
Some fans clearly have taken the sign to mean something else. One fan emailed Newsradio 620 WTMJ's John Jagler to say, "My son and I saw the Miller Lite billboard sign on TV yesterday and we were immediately enraged - I am a loyal Miller Lite drinker, but seriously rethinking that…. I am emailing Miller today!"
As for whether the sign will be back when the Brewers go back to Wrigley later in the season, Green says, "Given the chatter about this particular sign, I think the likelihood is that it will not go up [for next series]." |
