Racine Couple Charged in Boy's Death

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- A Racine couple have been charged after the woman's 2-year-old son was found dead with bruising on his head and body.

Twenty-seven-year-old Jessie M. Rodriguez was charged Friday with two counts of child abuse and one count of second-degree reckless homicide. Prosecutors say he beat the woman's two children with a belt or hanger, and tied the 2-year-old in bed with a blanket to keep him from moving.

Twenty-seven-year-old Tisa Hawes is charged with failing to prevent child abuse.

The coroner says Brian Hawes died of asphyxiation last month after being tied too tight with the blanket.

The older boy, a 7-year-old, is in protective custody.

Online court records didn't list an attorney for Rodriguez or Hawes on Saturday.
