25% of Voters Fail Checks in New System

Jon Byman

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Nearly a quarter of Wisconsin residents entered into the state's computerized voter registration database since Aug. 6 have failed identification checks.

That's according to state Government Accountability Board staff members.

Federal law requires each state to build a statewide voter registration list and cross-reference names with other state databases to verify identify and addresses. Wisconsin's software went on line Aug. 6.

Local clerks have entered 19,470 applications into the database. As of Tuesday, information on 4,350 of them, or 22 percent, hasn't matched information kept on the applicants at the state Department of Transportation or at the Social Security Administration.

Barbara A. Hansen is the database director. She says many of the red flags can be traced to data entry typos, confusing names and illegible handwriting on applications.
