$20M Offer "Best In The End"?

By Jay Sorgi

One text message, with lots of mixed messages.

That's what ESPN says Brett Favre sent reporter Ed Werder.

Favre, who chose not to take the plane he had chartered from Hattiesburg, MS to Green Bay on Thursday, is discerning whether to choose the Packers' offer of around $20,000,000 to stay retired and become a long-term ambassador to the Packers, or to followthrough on his request to the National Football League for reinstatement and report to Packers training camp.

It's a request NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has still not approved.

"There isn't a perfect solution to this, but (Packers President) Mark Murphy is at least trying," said Favre in his text to Werder regarding the Packers' offer, which went on the table soon after Favre retired in March and wasn't a last-ditch attempt to pay Favre to stay away from training camp.

"We know what they want and where I stand. His solution, though awkward and unsettling for most, may be the best in the end."

Where his desires stand, though, are different than the decision he may settle for.

"My intentions have been to play, and with Green Bay," said Favre in the same message.

"They say no, so I still want to play in this division for obvious reasons, which I made clear to management. If they won't let me play in Green Bay, let me play against you. That's where I am."

But if where he is becomes Green Bay, his agent says he'll handle whatever comes.

"He's prepared to deal with it," James "Bus" Cook said on Thursday. "He's ready to go back, but he can't go back until the commissioner reinstates him."

Once Favre is reinstated, the Packers will have 24 hours to decide whether to cut him or restore him to their active roster. They could also trade him, within or after the 24 hour period.

The New York Jets and Cook got engaged in trade talks over this week, according to a Green Bay Press-Gazette report, but Favre chose not to go to New York. Cook also held talks with Tampa Bay, according the the report.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the Packers have internally considered sending Favre to the Vikings or Bears in a trade.

By not acting Thursday, Goodell decreased the chances Favre would be present at Packers training camp Friday.

Cook said Favre still wants to be released, something the Packers have ruled out.

It is widely believed Favre would be willing to play for the Vikings. In filing tampering charges with the NFL against the Vikings two weeks ago, Packers officials expressed a belief that Vikings coaches had inappropriate contact with Favre -- and interest from the Vikings was the main reason behind Favre's last-minute desire to return.
