Man Critical After Running German Fest 5k

By Elizabeth Braun and Jay Sorgi

A man is in critical condition this morning after collapsing during a five-kilometer fund raising run at German Fest.

He completed Thursday's Run/Walk for the Hungry, a benefit for St. Ben's Community Meal hosted by 620 WTMJ's Bill Michaels.

The man, who is in his mid 50's to late 60's, finished the race, went to a nearby tent and collapsed.

"The gentleman crossed the finish line, and he ended up getting a water as he came to the finish line," explains Michaels who witnessed the incident.

"He grabs a water, grabs a plum, something to eat, and he just collapsed.

"Thank God there were some people there that were EMTs and first responders. Somebody screamed "is there a doctor around?" and these people came over, they were runners and walkers, and some were spectators, and they worked on this guy right away."

Organizers on the scene say the man had signed up the day of the event.

He was taken to the hospital. Michaels says about 1,200 people participated in the event.

Temperatures were in the mid 70's at the time the race occurred.
