Jefferson, Pewaukee Bracing for More Floods

By Elizabeth Braun and Jay Sorgi

People in Jefferson County were supposed to be cleaning up sandbags this weekend, not using them.

But with impending storms this weekend, the flooding that ravaged this county could return.

The Rock River is still five inches above flood stage at three different locations.

City Administrator Timothy Freitag says there's a huge volunteer cleanup effort scheduled for this weekend where they were supposed to be removing sandbags.

"It will make things more difficult," said Freitag. "Unfortunately, we can't undo what may happen. We hope to pick up sandbags this weekend and not be filling sand and putting them in place, quite frankly."

The good news: 250,000 sandbags are already in place in the most vulnerable areas if flood waters rise again.

Picking Up Sandbags in Jefferson

Even amidst the possibility of major flooding this weekend, Jefferson Mayor Gary Meyers is readying an effort to get rid of more than 250,000 sandbags that remain from the efforts to handle June's floods.

"I hope we get them picked up this weekend," said Meyers. "We're going to have to kind of wait and see what the weather does."

"We could handle a pretty decent storm. We can't handle something like what we had a month ago with really sustained, heavy floods.

"If it's inevitable that we're going to have a real deluge, we'll call people and cancel."

And in the meantime, Meyers explains that the city is back in business.

"The bridges are all open. The roads are all open. There's no more detours. Everything would appear to be normal until you get right to the river. That's where you see the sandbags."

More flooding is not what folks in Pewaukee need, as people in that city are still cleaning up for the problems in June.

"I think it would be absolutely devestating for the area, but I think we'll do alright," said Arthur Zarate of Brews 2 Cafe.

"Things have started to pick up since we had the break from the rain. I'm not looking forward to this next round."

"Always keep a positive attitude," said Mike Toffler of The Chocolate Factory. "We have a good product and local people have been very supportive. We just hope it stays that way."

Flooding in June got so bad in Pewaukee that fish were swimming in the streets. Buisnesses had to close and are still trying to recover financially.

The village administrator states that crews will have sandbags ready should water levels rise to what they were back in June.
