Death of dog prompts social media campaign for Wisconsin couple
ROME - A family dog is shot and killed by an arrow. The owners believe hunters did it on purpose.
Zoey, a one-year-old puppy, was a beloved family pet and family member for Tanya Meyer.
"She was just a perfect dog for my daughter to grow up with and then to find out that something like this happened, it was like ‘how could you?’" Meyer says.
Tanya's heartbreak began Friday, when Zoey didn't come home after her walk with the other family dog. So Tanya's husband started a search.
"He asked some hunting neighbors and they said ‘well, we saw her this morning and threw some sticks at 'em because they were bothering us in our tree stand but we haven't seen them since.’"
Three days of looking later, Tanya's husband found Zoey, shot with an arrow, dead near the same hunters' tree stand.
"For somebody that can do something like this, it's evil and it's cruel. You took our dog, you took our baby."
Tanya won't say who the hunters are until police wrap up their case. But it's a story that's already touched hearts around the world through a Facebook tribute called “Justice for Zoey.”
"I can't believe it. It's like people from Hong Kong and Iceland and Europe. It's just nuts.”
An overwhelming show of support, for a family overwhelmed with sadness.
"We're not looking for handouts or money or anything. We just want our healing to be done and over with and to kind of move on."
Tanya says they've had offers from people and breeders for another dog but she says it's just too soon to think about. Right now, all they want is justice for the dog they loved and lost.
