One person dead after early-morning crash near West Bend

ADDISON - One person is dead after a crash in a construction zone may have been caused by inattentive driving.

Four vehicles were on Highway 33, traveling westbound, around 8:15 a.m. when they were stopped in the construction zone. The driver of the last vehicle, an SUV, did not stop for the three vehicles in front of her and hit the last car in line.

When the car was hit by the SUV, it hit the vehicle in front of it and skidded across lanes of traffic.

The SUV was driven by a 22-year-old woman from West Bend, and the car was driven by a 33-year-old woman from West Bend.

The passenger in the car, a 50-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was taken to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, and the driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital had non-life threatening injuries.

"Inattentive driving by the operator of the SUV is believed to have been a contributing factor in the accident," said Captain Steve Gonwa with the Washington County Sheriff.

The crash is still under investigation.
