MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State regulators are letting We Energies install pollution controls at a coal-fired power plant some environmentalists want closed.
The state Public Service Commission voted 3-0 Friday to allow the upgrade at the plant in Oak Creek.
The Milwaukee-based utility will spend $830 million for the controls, a cost that will be passed on to customers.
Environmental and consumer groups have called for the facility to be closed and replaced, even though a new plant would cost billions of dollars.
Commissioners say one factor in their decision was that the coal plant is among the most efficient in the state.
The controls will limit emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide.
The cuts will help the plant comply with federal clean-air requirements.
