GERMANTOWN - A five-hour standoff in a quiet neighborhood came to a tragic end after a 50-year-old man took his own life.

Officers were called to a home near Appleton Avenue and Hilltop Road around 2:30 pm. Family had called police and told them a relative who lived there could be in danger.

The SWAT team was called in after arriving officers heard a gunshot.

"We were not positive whether the gunshot was contained within the house or if it was directed at officers," said Police Chief Peter Hoell.

Several hours later, members of the tactical team confirmed the man had taken his own life.

"He did barricade himself inside the house so we did have obstacles to overcome to get through that house and to do it safely." Said Chief Hoell.

The Chief told TODAY'S TMJ4 the man had no prior history with Germantown Police.

The victim's name hasn't been released.
