Robberies way up in Milwaukee, smartphones often the target
MILWAUKEE - Smartphones may be behind an increase in violent crime in Milwaukee.
Robberies are up nearly 20 percent in the first six months of 2013. According the the Journal Sentinel, 30 percent of those robberies involved smartphones being targeted.
It's a trend that has been going on around the country.
Police have been warning people to lock their phones and put tracking software on them.
Overall, the first snapshot at crime in Milwaukee for this year shows an 8 percent drop. That's driven by a big drop in property crime. Violent crime was up, driven by the increase in robberies.
