Fire at the Milwaukee County Courthouse
An electrical fire at the Courthouse causes problems Saturday
MILWAUKEE - A fire broke out in the Milwaukee County Courthouse basement on Saturday afternoon. Firefighters discovered flames shooting from the building's electrical room.
"The transformers themselves were going and the room itself was going down there," said fire Deputy Chief Terry Lintonen.
Firefighters had to cut the power before putting out the flames.
Emergency 911 calls were still being transferred to the Waukesha County Communications center, as of Saturday night.
Although the Milwaukee County Jail was never evacuated, visitors were turned away at the door. Christina Rojas of Milwaukee learned that while trying to visit an inmate.
"They told me there was no power and everything was closed until the power was turned back on," Rojas said.
The cause of the fire may not be known for some time.
"Anytime you're dealing with underground power vaults that are this size in the downtown area, it's a very significant event," said Deputy Chief Lintonen.
