Traffic stop leads to MPD officers delivering baby in middle of the road
MILWAUKEE - A traffic stop turned into a life-changing experience for two Milwaukee police officers.
Wednesday night, just after 10:15 p.m., MPD officers Xavier Benitez and Adam Bradley attempted to stop a speeding car on N. Water Street.
"Upon stopping the car on Water Street just north of W. St. Paul, they soon discovered the reason for the speed," said Lt. Mark Stanmeyer with Milwaukee Police.
"The expectant father was trying to get his wife to St. Mary's Hospital, as she was in labor."
"I could see that she was actually giving birth. I mean the head was fully crowned and everything." said Benitez to TODAY'S TMJ4's Todd Hicks.
Benitez delivered the baby in the front seat of their car in the middle of the road, with Bradley assisting. Milwaukee Fire and paramedics showed up a short time later and took the mom and baby to St. Mary's Hospital.
Officer Adam Bradley said he never thought he would face a situation like this. He told Todd, "a little bit of panic set in because they don't teach you this in the academy."
"The officer's said delivering the baby was the best thing they had ever done in their careers," said Stanmeyer.
The family has named the little girl Isabella. Mother and Daughter are doing fine.
