23-year-old Marquette student hit by alleged drunk driver Wednesday morning
MILWAUKEE - A 23-year-old woman was crossing at 16th and Wisconsin on her skateboard when she was hit by a van, and the driver took off toward Wells.
Sophomore Samantha Hessil skateboards through this area every day. She usually feels safe around campus.
"I haven't seen any cars that are less cautious. They really stop for all the students," Hessil says.
But, investigators say a man driving a green van ran a red light and hit the student early Wednesday morning. Police say the driver was drunk and took off. But, he pulled over when campus police spotted him.
"We had an officer on 16th street look in his rearview mirror and see the incident occur right behind him,” Chief Larry Rickard with Marquette Public Safety says.
The incident was also captured on surveillance video. The woman is in stable condition at a local hospital. Her injuries are not life threatening.
“She's a senior in the college of arts and sciences and we're relieved that we can be there for her immediately,” Brian Dorrington with the university says.
News that a student was hit by a van has others concerned about their walk to class.
'Scary, cuz it's literally one block away from our program,' Graduate Student Sunny Lu-Wells says.
Both the victim and the driver’s names are not being released. That driver faces several charges including OWI.
