MILWAUKEE - Mother nature was cutting construction workers along I-94 a break Saturday afternoon, as they rushed to finish a big project, that shut down the highway in both directions near College Avenue.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Pyritz said dry conditions enabled crews to move at a pace, about an hour ahead of schedule.

As of 1:30pm, they had already installed a storm sewer culvert, and were expected to start paving the road at 5pm.

All this may sound good, but for those stuck in traffic, the nightmare continued.

Pyrtiz said there were three mile backups in the southbound lanes, and half-mile backups in the northbound lanes.
