Man accused of killing unborn baby in crash appears in court
MILWAUKEE - Donovan Walker-Hall should never have been behind the wheel, but he was. Monday afternoon, he hit a pregnant woman with his car, killing her unborn child.
Walker-Hall walked into court covering his face.
This 23-year old is charged with four felonies including negligent homicide.
Police say on Monday, Walker-Hall was speeding along Martin Luther King Drive, going 56 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone. Just as he sped up to beat a red light, he hit a car in the intersection, drove onto the sidewalk and hit a woman walking by. That woman was nine months pregnant. She survived, but the baby did not.
Friday, the prosecutor requested $250,000 bail during Walker-Hall’s court hearing. He also argued that Walker-Hall shouldn't have been behind the wheel because he's never had a driver's license. The judge lectured Walker-Hall.
"I think $25,000 bail is an appropriate reasonable amount of bail for the fact that this gentleman is in all likelihood, if convicted of these offenses, going to see a substantial prison sentence imposed," the judge said.
The judge said the victim is still recovering from serious injuries.
