CHICAGO - On May 1, Chicago authorities were called to a recycling center for a report that they had found a newborn baby during a routine inspection before recycling.

According to the Chicago Ridge Police Department, the baby was found "discarded inside of a small, soft, red cooler and wrapped inside of a blue towel."

When paramedics arrived, they verified the infant was dead.

Police have since narrowed down the garbage pick-ups to Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin; North Chicago, Illinois; or Waukegan, Illinois.

An autopsy showed the baby was less than one week old, and was born before full term. However, if medical attention had been provided, the medical examiner said the child could have survived. They are waiting on results from a toxicology test.

The Chicago Ridge Police Department is asking for help from the public. If anyone has information about the case, please call 708-425-7831.
