Former Packers safety LeRoy Butler appears on CNN
WASHINGTON - Former Green Bay Packers player LeRoy Butler stands by his support for the NBA player who announced he's gay.
Butler lost a high-paying speaking engagement after he tweeted support for Jason Collins. The church that canceled Butler's appearance later told him he could still speak, but only if he took back his support and apologized to God and the church. Butler said on CNN Thursday night the church’s request made him angry.
“Some 16-year-old kid is somewhere in a closet with his father’s gun that he found,” Butler told Anderson Cooper. “And he’s thinking about putting it to his head, because he’s been tormented in school every single day. Because they may have found out he was gay, or they suspect that he’s gay. He doesn’t have a voice right now. You’re asking me to take all that back so he doesn’t have a voice. I won’t do that.”
Butler won't reveal the name of the church.
