Local student gets chance of a lifetime after essay contest
PLYMOUTH - A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a local student headed to Washington, D.C.
Nine-year-old Tyler Girard is one of four students who will take part in the wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetary over the weekend.
The fourth grader from Plymouth won the opportunity in an essay contest.
Girard's mother, Tracy Makowski, will be on hand for the trip and hopes it inspires other young students.
"It can show other kids that anybody can have a chance to do something like this," she said. "Work hard for it, try their best, become active in things."
Tyler and his mom are traveling with a group of student crossing guards through their local police department's Safety Patrol program.
