WAUWATOSA - The Ronald McDonald House in Wauwatosa is breaking ground on a big expansion.

The house provides a place for families to stay while children are getting medical treatment, usually at Children's Hospital.

"It's a place where a family can stay as long as they need to while their child is being served by Children's Hospital or one of the other local hospitals," said local Ronald McDonald House President and CEO Ann Petrie.

The home asks for a $10 nightly donation, but never requires anyone to pay to stay there.  Often times, the donation is too much for families dealing with medical care of a child.

There's a great need in our area.  "We have been at full capacity and turning families away for almost four years now," Petrie said.

The expansion will nearly double the size of the home to 70 rooms.

The Ronald McDonald House has raised $7-million dollars for the expansion.  It still needs to raise another $3-million.

The expansion is expected to be ready in the summer of 2014.
