MILWAUKEE - A "suspicious package" shut down the 16th Street Bridge in Milwaukee Wednesday afternoon.

According to Milwaukee Police, around 1:10 p.m. the Milwaukee Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious package in the area of 16th and Pierce St.

"As a precaution, the 16th Street Bridge has been temporarily closed while we investigate this report," said Inspector William Jessup with MPD.

The bridge reopened at 3:45 p.m. and Inspector Jessup later said:

"That report came from a citizen who observed an unattended backpack beneath the 16th Street Bridge. As a precaution, the bridge was temporarily closed and technicians from our Bomb Unit investigated the situation. The items in the backpack were found to be harmless."
