FOND DU LAC - The Fond du Lac Fire Department battled a fire Thursday morning caused by an explosion at a duplex.
According to fire chief Peter O'Leary, no one was inside the duplex when the explosion happened, but a woman who lives next door was injured by debris and hospitalized.
The explosion happened early Thursday morning at a home near the corner of Twilight Trail and Moonlight Lane. O'Leary said said the whole back end of the home is gone.
"Worse than lightning or thundering. It was very loud," said Marlene Kraus, a neighbor. "Pictures on the wall came down."
Kraus and her husband Alex evacuated and stayed warm in their car while firefighters battled to put out the fire.
"It was a pretty good fire that was coming," fire chief Troy Haase said. "It seemed to come out of the basement area, but enough that we had to get hose lines to extinguish."
The duplex was a new construction project, and there are not yet any tenants at the time of the explosion, but someone had put furniture in one of the units.
Photos from the scene (in the image gallery above) showed fire inside the garage and extensive damage to the home's right side. The pictures from the Fond du Lac Fire Department also revealed what appeared to be a "For Sale" sign in the front yard of the home.
