Mount Pleasant village clerk resigns, claiming harassment
MOUNT PLEASANT - The village clerk in Mount Pleasant is the third high-ranking village official to step down since September. All three of them have claimed problems with the village board, and it appears the allegations go a step further.
"Our ordinance was actually not compliant,” said Veronica Rudychev.
Village Clerk Rudychev has only been in office for a year, but resigned her position Monday.
In a resignation letter, Rudychev claimed she had "been continuously harassed by certain board and staff members."
She added: "...I fear continued harassment and retaliation."
Rudychev planned on leaving Friday, but was let go shortly after sending the letter.
"She was relieved of her work today,” said village administrator Tim Zarzecki. “We thought it was in the best interest of the village, and herself."
So what's behind the allegations?
Rudychev called out the board, and trustee Sonny Havn, who excused himself from Monday night's meeting.
"I've been subjected to some of his harassment as well," trustee Karen Albeck said.
Albeck said she also complained of nasty comments. Rudychev, she says, received the brunt of the abuse when she tried to streamline her department.
"We have a trustee on the board, or have a trustee on the board who has a special relationship with the person whose position was being eliminated," Albeck said.
The board face increased criticism with every employee who leaves.
Rudychev will be paid through the week. The deputy clerk will take over her duties for now.
