Volleyball community rallies for teen battling cancer
MILWAUKEE - At a huge youth volleyball tournament at the Delta Center, teams are coming together for a teen facing a major medical challenge.
The uniforms are just about every color, but there is a thread of yellow throughout this weekend's Badger Region Championships in Milwaukee.
"We saw this place full of yellow and it was awesome," said Jen Armson-Dyer of the Badger Region Volleyball Association.
The yellow is to display support for Greg Von Rueden. The 15-year-old New Berlin boy thought he beat an aggressive bone cancer. But just last week, his family learned it came back again. Deb Stadick is from the Yellow 4 Greg group.
"It's something that hits home," Stadick says. "It's something that nobody expects. To see him handle it with the courage."
So the volleyball community came together to show Greg he's not going through this alone. Organizers urged players to post on social media so Greg could see his fans. Entire teams decked out in yellow, headbands and arm bands, socks and laces - all posted to Facebook and Twitter.
Greg made a surprise visit to the tournament on Saturday, cheering on his West Allis team on their way to a championship.
"He was full of smiles. It was very inspirational," Armson-Dyer says.
