VERNON - A family from Waukesha County tried to salvage anything they could a day after their home burst into flames Wednesday night.

Kathy Delker said she was sleeping when she heard her daughter screaming their house was on fire.

Delker, her husband and their two children got out safely. The family grabbed two pet ferrets before running out the door, and Delker said fire fighters rescued their two cats who were trapped inside the house. Their dog also ran out the door and returned to the home several hours later.

Thursday, the family returned to what was left of their home. The couple were very emotional as they talked about losing nearly everything in the home they've lived for 28 years.

"It's like a bad dream that I didn't ever think I'd be in, it's surreal right now," Kathy Delker said.

Fire Officials say nearly a dozen fire departments helped battle the blaze.

The fire is currently under investigation.
