WINGATE, NC – Two people are dead and one has been airlifted to the hospital following a shooting near a North Carolina university.

The shooting happened near a campus entrance at Wingate University. Campus police were alerted to the shooting and placed the school on lockdown. The school says no students or university staff were involved.

Students praised the school for its efforts to keep them informed of the lockdown.

"Our phones were blowing up. It was good to know that they have our back,” said student Kyle Johnson. “Every 15 minutes we get another e-mail of what's going on, that we're staying locked down."

The lockdown was lifted about two hours later.
