CALUMET CO. - Tiffany Dombrowski was just seven years old when a pickup truck she was in fell through the ice on Lake Winnebago. Now, four years later, she's receiving a special honor for what happened after she was pulled from the water.
It was the Calumet County Dive Team, along with the Stockbridge Fire Department, that rescued young Dombrowski. And now she's a member of the dive team.
Emotions were running high as the 11-year-old was made an honorary member of the county's dive rescue team.
In February 2009, Dombrowski was in a pick-up truck that fell through the ice on Lake Winnebago. Her best friend Savannah Kleinhans and Savannah's father never made it out alive.
Authorities think Dombrowski was under water for more than 30 minutes when she was pulled, unresponsive, from the lake.
“Just to see her there and not knowing if she's going to make it or not,” said Connie Loewe.
Loewe was one of the first responders on the scene that day.
“I'm very proud of her,” she said.
Since then, the two have grown very close. She helped Tiffany become a certified scuba diver.
Dombrowski loves the water, and she just wanted to learn how to do it. It's been a long journey but her life has gone from tragedy to triumph, and she's all smiles.
The 11-year-old is looking forward to making more dives in her future and who knows maybe someday saving someone's life.
